Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR Therapy

Eye movement Desensitisation and reprocessing therapy (EMDR) is a therapy originally designed for the treatment of trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), however has also been used to treat a variety of conditions related to disturbing memories and adverse life events.
The therapy works by allowing a person to reassess situations in their life that may have been misinterpreted or that are highly emotionally charged. This is achieved by the exploration of disturbing memories in conjunction with the use of various methods of non-invasive bilateral brain stimulation (e.g. guided eye movements from left to right, alternate pulses in the left and right hands, or tones in headphones). It is understood that the process allows for more effective processing of memories due to the engagement of a person’s adaptive life experience and safety in the present in conjunction with the memory.
Many people have reported significant improvements following processing with EMDR therapy, and there is a reliable evidence base demonstrating effectiveness in the use of EMDR therapy to treat PTSD, with ongoing research in other areas. This has led to the World Health Organisation recommendation of EMDR therapy as an effective treatment for PTSD.
